Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional where we are continuing in our Wisdom for Life series from Proverbs.

Today, from Proverbs 2:1-5, we see that we fool ourselves if we say that we want God’s wisdom whilst not wholeheartedly pursuing it!

‘My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.’ (Proverbs 2:1-5)

i. Do we accept God’s wisdom?

Have you and I decided that God’s Word is our wisdom and that we’ll obey it no matter what? There was a moment in Billy Graham’s life when he decided in a new and complete way to trust in Gods’ Word. John Pollock quotes Graham:

"I went back and got my Bible, and I went out in the moonlight. And I got to a stump and put the Bible on the stump and knelt down, and I said, 'Oh, God; I cannot prove certain things. I cannot answer some of the questions that Chuck and some of the other people are raising, but I accept this book by faith as the Word of God.'"

This decision to believe the Bible over and against our opinions and preferences is a constant war rather than a battle that’s won in a moment. We constantly have to ‘turn our ear…apply the heart…cry aloud…look for’ God’s truth. We need to ‘put on the armour of God’, including the ‘belt of truth’ and ‘the sword of the Spirit’ regularly and, particularly, when we feel that our hearts and minds are under attack.

ii. How do we know if we accept the truth?

This text expands on what it means to accept the Word of God. We are taught that this is not mental acceptance only. Many of us say, “I believe that” about many things about which we have no intention of doing. To truly accept God’s Word means that we actively pursue it as set out in this text. Those who accept it, ‘turn their ear…apply their heart…cry aloud…look for’ God’s truth.

iii. The road of truth leads to worship

Finally, we are told that those who will accept the Word by seeking, will ‘will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.’ As we’ve said, we know that one accepts the truth of the Bible because we actively seek to feed on it; however, secondly, we know that one accepts the Bible because they ‘fear the Lord’ - they worship Him with every facet of their lives.

We fool ourselves if we say that we want God’s wisdom whilst not wholeheartedly pursuing it!

Let’s pray together

“Father, you say that your truth is silver and hidden treasure. Help me to value and pursue it wholeheartedly. You say that those who pursue your truth will fear you and know you. Please teach me to worship and know you. Amen.”

Community Group Notes

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

2. Icebreaker

How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

Week #2. Proverbs 1:20–2:8 — Wisdom calls to us, so how will we respond?

1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?

2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.

3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?

4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.

5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)

  • How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?

  • Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

6. Let’s pray together:

  • Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.

  • Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.

  • Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
