Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional where we are continuing in our Wisdom for Life series from Proverbs.

Today, from Proverbs 2:9-11, we see that there are great promises and maturity available, but only for the diligent!

‘Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.’ (Proverbs 2:9-11)

i. Maturity comes to the diligent

This text beginning with ‘then you will..’ takes us back to verses 3-4:

‘…Indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure then…’

It’s vital for us to understand that maturity comes to those who are diligent in the right things - in seeking God’s wisdom through learning. Getting older doesn’t necessarily lead to great maturity - it can just give us more time to become more silly and stubborn!

ii. Find ways to learn that suit you

As we seek to learn God’s wisdom, we all have different capacities and ways that we find helpful in order to learn. Some can read for hours on end. Some find it helpful to read less but deeply. Some like to listen to teaching more than read. Some like to use music. We must all seek to find ways to learn that we enjoy and that are helpful to us - rather than jumping through the hoops of others’ expectations!

iii. The promises for those who seek God’s wisdom diligently

Those who seek God’s wisdom are promised:

  • ‘You will understand what is right and just and fair’  - We will become people who do what’s right and see that others are treated well. The wise are concerned for the welfare of others.

  • ‘You will understand… every good path’ - Many want to know if this or that is God’s will - or path; studying God’s wisdom will give one good intuitions regarding God’s ‘good, pleasing and pleasant will’.

  • ‘Wisdom will enter the heart’ - The heart, the centre of our wills - is transformed by Spirit-given truth. We live from the heart and a renewed and sanctified heart is achieved by God’s truth.

  • ‘Knowledge will be pleasant to your soul’ - One effect of the Spirit’s work is to make us people who love God’s truth. We love the wisdom of the cross, but we also love His Bible - it’s pleasant to our souls.

  • ‘Discretion will protect you’ - Discretion (mezimmah) is about wisely plotting a course - doing things in a fitting way. We all know, and I certainly know, that one can do the right things but in the wrong way! Those who seek God’s wisdom will serve people with their words and actions and protect themselves also.

  • ‘Understanding will guard you’ - Finally, we are promised that truth, knowledge and wisdom guard or watch over us. Making good choices and believing the right things keeps us from demonic traps. For example, believing God’s wisdom in the cross - that we are saved by grace - will guard us from the arrows of condemnation that assail us each day.

Let’s pray together

“Father, I thank you for the promise of maturity that you give to those who seek your truth. I need to mature. I need your discretion. I need to know you more. I want to walk your paths. Please help me to grow up by feeding on your truth. Amen.”

Community Group Notes

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

2. Icebreaker

How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

Week #3: Proverbs 2:9-3:4. Remember and do my teachings.

1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?

2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.

3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?

4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.

5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)

  • How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?

  • Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

6. Let’s pray together:

  • Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.

  • Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.

  • Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
