Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional where we are continuing in our Wisdom for Life series from Proverbs.

From Proverbs 8:12-21, we reflect on how wisdom is made up of prudence, knowledge, and discretion. Every facet is vital if our wisdom is not to become foolish!

‘“I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion. 13 To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behaviour, and perverse speech. 14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power. 15 By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just; 16 by me princes govern, and nobles—all who rule on earth. 17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. 18  With me are riches and honour, enduring wealth and prosperity. 19 My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, 21  bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me and making their treasuries full.”’ (Proverbs 8:12-21)

In our last devotional on Proverbs 8:1-11, we saw how wisdom is revealed all around us and meant to be applied in every sphere of our lives. Building on that, today's passage presents great promises for those who listen to and apply God's wisdom.

i. The facets of wisdom

Here, as we saw in Proverbs 1:4, we need these three key facets of wisdom:

  • Prudence (Shrewdness and caution) – Practical wisdom that applies truth appropriately to the moment.

  • Knowledge (Understanding) – A deep grasp of truth, particularly knowing God and His Word.

  • Discretion (Purposeful planning) – Acting and speaking with intention, keeping the end goal in mind. This includes wise strategy, self-control, and organisation.

While these qualities overlap, neglecting any of them can lead to folly.

  • Knowledge without prudence leads to reckless application of truth, causing disharmony. We all know people who are biblically knowledgeable but difficult to work with—full of themselves rather than full of wisdom.

  • Discretion without knowledge results in misguided efficiency—working hard but on the wrong things. Some are passionate about Jesus but lack wisdom, rushing into situations and creating chaos.

  • Prudence without discretion and knowledge can lead to fear-driven inaction. Sometimes, we’re so aware of what could go wrong that we fail to step forward in faith and wise planning.

ii. The Promises of Wisdom

Wisdom is made up of prudence (reflection), knowledge (understanding), and discretion (planning). Every facet is vital if our wisdom is not to become foolish! This passage assures us that a well-rounded, godly wisdom leads to prosperity in every area of life:

  • Our leadership will flourish because we are making good choices to lead people to the right things.

  • Our finances will be blessed because we reflect, seek understanding, and plan how to use our resources well.

  • Our purpose will be clear, helping us focus on what truly matters because we’re not driven by excitement or emotions, but by wisdom.

May we seek and apply this wisdom daily, trusting in God’s promises for those who walk in His ways.

Let’s pray together

“Father, please teach me your wisdom. Give me prudence, knowledge, and discretion. Rather than rushing into things, give me a heart that prayerfully reflects, applies your truth, and makes plans that honour you. Amen.”

Community Group Notes

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

2. Icebreaker

How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

Week #10. Proverbs 8:12-9:9. The facets of wisdom.

1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?

2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.

3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?

4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.

5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)

  • How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?

  • Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

6. Let’s pray together:

  • Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.

  • Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.

  • Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
