‘“The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be. When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, before he made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth. I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. Then I was constantly at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.”’ (Proverbs 8:22-31)
i. Wisdom’s role in Creation
This passage describes wisdom’s role in creation. The ESV translates verse 22 as: “The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work.” This emphasises that wisdom is not created but is an eternal attribute of God—something He always had and employed in creating the world.
Verse 30 beautifully portrays wisdom as being “beside Him, like a master workman” (ESV). This poetic imagery highlights wisdom’s active role in shaping creation.
ii. Is Wisdom Created?
At first glance, this passage might seem to suggest that wisdom was created at some point in time. However, a closer look at the Hebrew meaning and the translations shows otherwise. For example:
“Brought me forth as the first of His works” (NIV) is better understood as “possessed me at the beginning of His work” (ESV).
“I was formed long ages ago” (NIV) is more accurately translated as “Ages ago I was established” (ESV).
This tells us that wisdom was not a created entity but an eternal aspect of God Himself.
iii. Does This Passage Refer to Jesus?
Some see this as a description of Jesus before His incarnation, drawing from passages like John 1:1-3 (“In the beginning was the Word…”). While Jesus certainly embodies divine wisdom, this passage personifies wisdom poetically, much like other parts of Proverbs. The primary intent of the author is to emphasise God’s eternal wisdom—that it has shaped creation, stood the test of time, and is worthy of our trust and obedience.
iv. Admiration, Application, and Celebration
Verses 23-31 echo the creation account in Genesis 1:1-28, showing how divine wisdom shaped the world. This passage concludes with:
“I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.” (Proverbs 8:30-31)
God’s wisdom delights in His creation, especially in humanity. This invites us to ask:
Do we recognise and admire God’s wisdom in creation?
Are we applying the wisdom of our Creator in our lives?
Do we celebrate His joy over us as the pinnacle of His creation?
Let’s Pray Together:
"Father, I see Your glory and wisdom in creation. Help me to notice and admire it more, to praise you more, and to trust you more. May I seek to know and apply Your wisdom, and may I be filled with the revelation of your joy over me, because I am made in Your image. Amen.”
