Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional (posted, at present, every weekday) as we continue our Ephesians series: Ephesians - To the praise, for the purpose, in the power of God.

Yesterday, we reflected on the wonder of being chosen by God. Today, we turn to the incredible purpose of that choice: that we should be holy and blameless in His sight.

You can listen to this devotional below

‘For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love.’ (Ephesians 1:4)

Most of us struggle to feel spiritually clean. We’re painfully aware of our failures - both past and present - and often carry a quiet sense of guilt or unworthiness. The world may tell us to ignore or suppress these feelings, but our conscience speaks truthfully: we have sinned, and we need cleansing.

The good news is this: in Christ, we have been washed, forgiven, and declared righteous. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has made us holy and blameless in God’s sight - not by our own effort, but purely by His grace.

Let’s briefly consider what that means:

1. Holy – Set apart for God

To be holy means to be set apart as God’s own possession. Every Christian has been chosen and, therefore, are made holy - set apart for God -  in Christ. This is our ‘position’ - we are holy in Christ. However, along with position, we are also called to ‘progression’ -  holiness also involves increasingly living a Christ-like life. We’ve been chosen not only to belong to God but to become more like Him.

2. Blameless – Clean before God and others

To be blameless means to be without blemish and without fault - inwardly and outwardly. God sees us this way now in Christ, however,  He is also working in us, by His Spirit, to make our lives reflect that reality more and more.

3. In His Sight – God's true view of us

It’s astonishing that a holy God sees us as holy and blameless. This is possible only because of imputed righteousness - Christ’s perfect life credited to us. Regardless of how we feel, this is how God sees us now.

Today, let’s see the wonder of being holy and blameless in God’s holy sight, all by virtue of our faith in Christ; let’s also see that, by God’s power, we are called to pursue greater holiness, blamelessness in God’s sight. As we are urged later in this letter:

‘As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.’ (Ephesians 4:1)

Finally, this truth of being holy and blameless in His sight, is looking forward to eternity. God wants us to see with faith the new creation in which we will be restored - fully holy and blameless before Him, forever.

Response

  • Are you holy and blameless in God’s sight?

  • Have you trusted in Christ for cleansing?

  • Are you allowing the Spirit to make you more like Jesus?

  • And are you looking forward to the day when you’ll stand before God - perfect, pure, and full of joy?

‘Those he justified, he also glorified.’ (Romans 8:30)

Community Group Notes

1. Notices

It might be a good idea to start with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

Important - please ensure you are aware of the plans regarding New Ground Sunday this coming Sunday.

2. Icebreaker

How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

On Sunday, we continued our series entitled: Ephesians: to the praise, for the purpose, in the power of God.

Please read Ephesians 1:4-6 and discuss:

  1. Personal Reflection – What did God speak to you about through Sunday’s message?

  2. What do these verses say about God’s involvement in our becoming Christians?

  3. What are we chosen for, and how are we to actively pursue these things?

SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)

  • From Ephesians 1:4-6, How does knowing that salvation is according to God’s call meant to inspire confidence to witness?

  • Share Stories – Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

  • Practical Next Steps – Who is God putting on your heart to reach? Are there any ‘people of peace’ (*see note) in your life—those who are receptive to you and spiritual conversation?

Let’s pray together:

  • Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.

  • Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.

  • Pray specifically for the “people of peace” in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
