Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional as we continue our Christmas series.

From Luke 2:15-20, we see that those who come to Jesus will also go for Jesus.

1. The shepherds believe and go to Jesus

‘When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.’ (Luke 1:15-16)

The shepherds, who were initially terrified by the appearance of the angels, now respond in faith. They say:

“Let’s go… and see this thing… which the Lord has told us about.”

They believed the message given to them - earlier, they were told:

‘“Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”’

Their journey is a beautiful picture of what happens when anyone comes to faith in Christ:

  • We may not experience terror, but we feel conviction of sin or a longing to be right with God.

  • We hear the good news that Jesus is Saviour and Lord.

  • And then, like them, we “go to Him”—we take a step of faith and trust Jesus.

Their response models true conversion: hearing, believing, and coming to Christ.

2. The shepherds spread the good news about Jesus

After meeting Jesus, the shepherds do not keep the message to themselves:

When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.’ (Luke 2:17–20)

Salvation is personal, but it is never private.

The angels shared the good news with shepherds, and the shepherds in turn became God’s messengers. This is the pattern for all believers.

Notice that their message was not focused on the dazzling angelic encounter. Instead:

‘…they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child…’

Likewise, our testimony points to Jesus - who He is, what He has done in His death and resurrection, and how He calls all people to repent and believe. We may share how God has worked in our lives, but the heart of the good news is always Christ.

The passage concludes:

‘The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.’ (Luke 2:19–20)

Those who meet Jesus become worshippers and witnesses - and, let’s never forget that those who actively worship will become witnesses, and those who actively witness will become greater worshippers.

Response

  • Have we believed what we have heard and truly come to Jesus?

  • Are we continuing to come to Him daily for spiritual strengthening?

  • And are we going - bringing the message of Jesus to the people and places where He has sent us?

May we follow the shepherds’ example: coming to Christ, then going for Christ.
