Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional. As we approach Easter, we are reflecting on some of Jesus’ final words from the Last Supper and the Upper Room Discourse in John’s Gospel.
At all times, Jesus wants to give us His peace!

‘“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”’ (John 16:33)
1. Why do we lack peace?
Inner peace - peace in our lives and in the world - is something we all long for, yet often lack.
Jesus explains why: “In this world you will have trouble.”
We live in a fallen world marked by disappointment, suffering, sickness, and loss. Even more, our faith in Christ can lead to misunderstanding, rejection, or persecution. Trouble is not unusual—it is inevitable.
Yet in the midst of this reality, Jesus gives a promise: “In me you may have peace.”
2. How does Jesus give us peace?
‘“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”’ (John 16:33)
i. Peace is found in trouble
Firstly, we must listen to what Jesus has told us. He has made it clear: “In this world you will have trouble…”
We often lose our peace because we are surprised by trials—whether suffering, loss, or disappointment. But Jesus prepares us for this reality so that we are not shaken by it.
Trouble is not to lead to the absence of Christ’s peace; it is the very context in which His peace is experienced. As Peter writes:
‘Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.’ (1 Peter 4:12-13)
ii. Peace is found in Christ
Secondly, peace is not found in our circumstances, it is found in Christ:
‘“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble…”’
True peace is found in knowing Jesus. To know Him is to know God—to live in relationship with our Lord and Creator.
This peace comes through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. As we walk closely with Christ, we discover His peace even in the midst of life’s troubles. As Psalm 23 reminds us, even in the darkest valleys, the Lord is with us.
This peace also rests on our reconciliation with God. Through justification by faith, we now have peace with God (Romans 5), and therefore can experience the peace of God in every circumstance.
Response - Take Heart
‘“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”’ (John 16:33)
The presence of the risen Jesus gives us peace
‘On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”’ (John 20:19-22)
The disciples were afraid, anxious, and overwhelmed—but everything changed when Jesus stood among them. His presence replaced fear with peace and sorrow with joy.
This is still true for us today. Our peace is not found in a trouble-free life, but in the presence of the risen Christ. He has overcome the world—its sin, its suffering, and even death itself.
So how should we respond?
Believe His words – Trust that trouble is not the end of the story.
Draw near to Him – Peace is found in Him, not in our circumstances.
Take heart – Because Jesus has already won the victory.
