Today, from Proverbs 1:5-6, we see that if we want to get wisdom, we must study God’s Word.

‘Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.’ (Proverbs 1:5-6)
i. The wise listen
Our section begins with a statement that reveals the measure of our or another’s wisdom - ‘The wise listen’! Listening is an often missing attribute. Those who fail to listen are proud. However, we are not just to listen to everything and anyone! We are told to listen to things that are passed down from those with proven wisdom - in this case from Solomon, via David and, no doubt, the sayings of the wise more broadly. For us, we are to listen to God’s Word and the wisdom and understanding that it gives to us.
ii. The wise listen in the Word
If we want to become wise, learned, and discern the right paths to take, we need to listen to God in His Word. Yes, the world around us has much to teach; however, all extra-biblical wisdom is to be weighed against the teaching of Scripture. Whatever our culture teaches about love, relationships, parenting, work, singleness, how to find peace, who God is… all of the attitudes of our culture are to be weighed against God’s wisdom, and we are to ‘eat the meat and spit out the bones’.
Are you wise? Do you listen to God? Do you give time to studying the Bible? Are we listening to our culture but failing to weigh worldly attitudes against God’s attitude? In essence, do we believe in what we read regarding God’s Word:
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.’ (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Let’s pray together:
“Father, I thank you that you’ve given us your wisdom in your Word—the Bible. Forgive me when I’ve been too devoted to listening to the attitudes and wisdom of others rather than your attitude and wisdom in your Word. Today, I repent and say with fresh faith— your word is my wisdom and a lamp for my feet. Amen.”
Community Group Notes
1. Notices
It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.
For your diary: Our next weekend away will be 19th-21st June 2026!!
2. Icebreaker
How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?
3. Worship together
Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.
4. Study and pray together
Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.
Week #1: Proverbs 1:1-19. The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?
2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.
3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?
4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.
5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)
How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?
Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.
6. Let’s pray together:
Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.
Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.
Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
