‘My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”— my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.’ (Proverbs 1:10-19)
i. When enticed
Wise living means handling pressure from others. As I tell my children when cycling, “You can ride perfectly, but watch out for others!” Likewise, we must stay alert to temptation. The foolish neglect to pray, “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” Let’s make this our daily habit.
ii. Let’s swallow them alive!
These verses depict greed in vivid, extreme terms. Though we may not ambush or rob, we’re tempted to become greedy, dishonest, exploit others, and ruin relationships chasing wealth unwisely.
iv. Be as wise as a bird!
Proverbs compares wisdom to a bird: Birds, though less intelligent than humans, instinctively fly away when they see a trap. We should do the same! When we recognise temptation, especially the entangling net of foolishness in the pursuit of wealth, we must flee. Let us be wise enough to see the trap and fly away.
Let’s pray together:
“Father, forgive me that, too often, I go into the day without seeking your protection. In this battle, may I put on your armour. Please give me a good heart and your wisdom in the use and pursuit of wealth. May I enjoy it and bless many. Amen.”
Community Group Notes
1. Notices
It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.
For your diary: Our next weekend away will be 19th-21st June 2026!!
2. Icebreaker
How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?
3. Worship together
Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.
4. Study and pray together
Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.
Week #1: Proverbs 1:1-19. The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?
2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.
3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?
4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.
5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)
How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?
Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.
6. Let’s pray together:
Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.
Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.
Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
