Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional where we are continuing in our Wisdom for Life series from Proverbs.

Today, from Proverbs 3:7-8, we learn that the truly wise never think of themselves as wise.

‘Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.’ (Proverbs 3:7-8)

i. A warning against being proud

This is a warning against pride. The proud are wise in their own eyes. They trust in their abilities. The proud believe that they are capable, in their own strength, of discerning what’s right and, more than that, define what’s right. Isaiah says something very similar:

‘Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.’ (Isaiah 5:21)

ii. What is humility?

Humility is the opposite of being wise in your own eyes. The humble know that they need the Holy Spirit to teach them wisdom. They know that wisdom is not found by looking within, but by looking to God. Wisdom is described again as ‘fear the Lord…’ - Reverencing God and His Word - are ‘the beginning of wisdom’ (Proverbs 1:7). Those who are wise in their own eyes judge God, but the humble let God’s word judge and correct them.

iii. The results of humility

Humility will result in holiness; we are told that those who refrain from being wise in their own eyes, choosing, rather, to fear the Lord, will ‘shun evil’. True humility and wisdom say “yes” to God’s holy ways and “no” to evil!

The pursuit of God’s wisdom and holiness, we are told, leads to ‘health to your body and nourishment to your bones.’ Whilst living in a fallen world and whilst being subject to illness, we are to understand that living wisely does lead to greater physical and mental health than foolishness. A wise life leads to good results! Added to this, Christians are to remember the ministry and teachings of Christ and pray for the sick.

Let’s pray together

“Father, I confess my weakness and that I need your wisdom, and I need you to teach me your wisdom. Give me a heart that fears you. May I live the wise and health-giving lifestyle that you want for me and that also brings you honour. Amen”

Community Group Notes

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

For your diary: Our next weekend away will be 19th-21st June 2026!!

2. Icebreaker

How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

Week #4: Proverbs 3:5-15. Trust in the Lord with all your heart.

1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?

2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.

3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?

4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.

5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)

  • How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?

  • Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

6. Let’s pray together:

  • Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.

  • Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.

  • Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
