‘Wisdom will save you also from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words, who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God. Surely her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead. None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.’ (Proverbs 2:16-19)

i. The power of words

A massive theme of Proverbs is the dangers of sexual sin. In the previous section on ungodly influences, we are told regarding their words, ‘men whose words are perverse’. Here, again, it’s words that are shown to have great power. Her words are described as ‘seductive (smooth) words’. Sinful sex is promoted in images and words. It’s words that defend and teach the ‘doctrines of demons’ regarding sex. Our culture often teaches that all forms of sex are fine as long as it’s between consenting adults. This sounds kind and reasonable. However, these are ’seductive words’ that lead the foolish away from God’s wisdom.

ii. The destructive path of sexual sin

We are told that ‘her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead. None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.’ Too many have experienced the destructive results of adultery and sexual immorality. Added to broken human relationships, we are told that it leads to hell - separation from God. This is why we need to hear:

‘For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore, not be partners with them.’ (Ephesians 5:5-7)

Sexual sin must be confessed and repented of. Of course, reconciliation with God is always available. However, the consequences of the pain of brokenness in human relationships cannot always be avoided. This is why we are commanded:

‘But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.’ (Ephesians 5:3)

May we be those who are wise, who listen to wisdom and so avoid the attractions, but, ultimately, the lies of sexual sin.

Let’s pray together:

Forgive me when I’ve rebelled against You sexually. Forgive me when my thoughts and actions have gone down the road of sexual sin. Today, I ask for forgiveness and repent of all sexual sin. I commit myself to investing in healthy relationships and to honouring the covenants that I have made. Amen.

Community Group Notes

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

For your diary: Our next weekend away will be 19th-21st June 2026!!

2. Icebreaker

How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

Week #3: Proverbs 2:9-3:4. Remember and do my teachings.

1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?

2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.

3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?

4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.

5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)

  • How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?

  • Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

6. Let’s pray together:

  • Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.

  • Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.

  • Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
