Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional where we are continuing in our Wisdom for Life series from Proverbs.

Today, from Proverbs 3:19-20, we reflect on how God’s wisdom in the created order is to fill us with confidence to trust in Him.

‘By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.’ (Proverbs 3:19-20)

I love nature documentaries. I’m always taken back by the beauty and diversity of the created world. Every aspect of the world speaks of the glory of God. Here, the author is wanting us to recall God’s great wisdom, seen in creation, so as to humble us and place our trust in Him. At the end of the book of Job, God confronts him:

‘“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?”’ (Job 38:4-7)

Today, let’s be humbled but raised in faith as we look on God’s works in creation. Bill Bryson, writing of the cells in the human body:

‘Every cell in nature is a thing of wonder. Even the simplest are beyond the limits of human ingenuity. To build the most basic (yeast) cell, for example, you would have to miniaturise about the same number of components as are found in a Boeing 777 jetliner and fit them into a sphere just 5 microns across; then somehow you would have to persuade that sphere to reproduce…’ (Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything)

It’s so strange that every living thing is made of things that we, with all of our advanced technology, still cannot make and yet so many have faith that God doesn’t exist, choosing to believe that life, which we cannot make, has been made without any thought or design whatsoever! Today, let’s glory in God’s wisdom as seen in creation. With the Psalmist, let’s sing:

‘The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.’ (Psalm 19:1-2)

Let’s pray together

“Lord Jesus, with John we say, ‘Through [You] all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In [You] was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.’ Today, humble me to trust your matchless wisdom. Use me to reveal the light of your creation to others. Amen.”

Community Group Notes

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

2. Icebreaker

How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

Week #5. Proverbs 3:16-35. The God of creation knows about true life and wisdom.

1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?

2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.

3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?

4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.

5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)

  • How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?

  • Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

6. Let’s pray together:

  • Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.

  • Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.

  • Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
