Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional where we are continuing in our Wisdom for Life series from Proverbs.
Today, from Proverbs 4:10-13, we reflect on how wisdom leads us along straight paths and away from falling flat on our face.

‘Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.’ (Proverbs 4:10-13)
I’m sure that we’ve all had the experience of falling over. Maybe we’re walking along, or down some stairs, and something trips us over. None of us want to trip over, and God wants to protect us from tripping over. However, if we fail to listen to wisdom, we, in effect, are throwing trip hazards and slippery ice onto our path! Here, wisdom is likened to walking or running on a straight and flat road. Like those in a relay race, the art of running the good race of life is to ‘Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.’ In Hebrews, we are urged:
‘Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.’ (Hebrews 12:12-13)
The wise ‘strengthen [their] feeble arms and weak knees, [and] “Make level paths [their] feet,” by knowing and applying God’s Word. They train themselves and strengthen themselves by digesting God’s truth. They then seek to diligently apply God’s wisdom to their lives. The great promise for those who will listen and seek God’s wisdom is so beautifully set forth by Isaiah:
‘He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.’ (Isaiah 40:29-31)
Like the runner in the relay race, have you taken God’s baton? Are you holding on to it? Are you running in God’s truth and strength?
Let’s pray together
“Father, I thank you that you want me to walk and run without falling over. Please train me in your truth. Please strengthen me with your truth. Give me a hunger and thirst to know and apply your truth so as to be strong and run this life for your glory. Amen.”
