Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional where we are continuing in our Wisdom for Life series from Proverbs.
Today, from Proverbs 5:20-23, we reflect on how worship is a shield against the idols of life, and the idol of sex in particular.

‘Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman? For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths. The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast. For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly.’ (Proverbs 5:20-23)
i. Why be intoxicated with sexual sin?
Let’s think about the reasons why we may be vulnerable to sexual sin. It’s important to remember that we all have a ‘sinful nature’ in the sense that we have aspects of our nature that are not yet perfected. This is why we are told:
‘No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.’ (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Sexual sin is ‘common to mankind’. This is the reason why we can be ‘intoxicated with’ sexual sin. If we fail to appreciate the vulnerability in our nature, we will fail to be humble, prayerful, and careful.
ii. Live in the vision of God
We are warned that the hidden sin in our hearts, minds, and behind closed doors is in full view of God. The truth that God never leaves or forsakes, which is so comforting, is also to create shame and repentance to those who are choosing to sin.
Added to this, the antidote to the idolatry of sex is living in the presence of God— worship. Many dress to impress. Many will not leave their homes without spending way too much time in front of a mirror because they know they will be in ‘full view’ of people. However, are we living ‘in full view of the Lord’? Are we walking with Him? Are we being inspired and empowered by Him? Those who know their ‘ways are in full view of the Lord’ will be kept on healthy and righteous paths.
ii. Apply discipline and create good ruts
The word ‘path’ (v.21 - Magal) means the ruts worn in a path by repeated use. This is about habits and addictions. Many things, including sexual sin and adultery, can become addictions. Healthy marriage, and , if we are single, healthy friendships, are the result of the good ‘ruts’ we’ve created in our lives through good habits. As we finish, the ‘path’ or ‘rut’ that I want us to reflect on is our worship habits. Are we seeking to create a habit of living ‘in full view of the Lord’? Do we, habitually, worship and pray? Do we ask for God’s help through the day? When temptation comes, may we have such deep ruts of love for God that we are able to make good decisions for His glory and our freedom!
Let’s pray together as we finish
“Father, help me to be ‘intoxicated’ by the right things and right people. Help me to ‘Embrace’ godly relationships. My ways are in ‘full view’ to you. May I be inspired and empowered by the promise of your presence and may I always seek to do what’s pleasing in your sight. Amen.”
Community Group Notes
1. Notices
It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.
2. Icebreaker
How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?
3. Worship together
Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.
4. Study and pray together
Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.
Week #7: Proverbs 5:1-6:5. Pay attention and have healthy relationships.
1. What themes stand out in this week’s section? Identify key ideas and repeated patterns. What is the focus of this section?
2. What promises does God offer, and what warnings does He give? Look for specific encouragements, blessings, or cautions in the text.
3. How does this speak into our lives today? What are the practical ways we could live this out — individually, in our families, in our community?
4. How is God calling you to respond? Consider what this means for your heart, your choices, and your direction.
5. SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite)
How might the wisdom in this week's section of Proverbs help us to be a light for Jesus?
Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.
6. Let’s pray together:
Let’s pray for one another based on our study, and bring before God any other needs or requests for prayer.
Pray for one another's SIV opportunities and boldness in following the Spirit's promptings.
Pray specifically for the 'people of peace' in our lives—asking God to open hearts and provide opportunities to speak life and truth.
