Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional where we are continuing in our Wisdom for Life series from Proverbs.
Today, from Proverbs 7:1-5, we reflect on how belonging to God’s family shapes our response to His wisdom.
“My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, ‘You are my sister,’ and to insight, ‘You are my relative.’ They will keep you from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words.” (Proverbs 7:1-5)

i. Two wisdoms on offer
This passage presents us with a contrast: two paths to life—one shaped by God’s wisdom and another marked by seductive folly. At first glance, the second path may appear more appealing. It seems more exciting, easier, and more aligned with our natural desires. So why would we choose the first path—the one requiring discipline, obedience, and careful guarding of God’s commands?
ii. Wisdom and Identity
Knowing our identity is the key to our choices. Notice the three familial terms in this passage: son, sister, and relative. These are not just casual words; they remind us of our place in God’s family. When we become Christians, we are adopted as children of God (Romans 8:15). We gain brothers and sisters in Christ (Mark 3:35). We become part of God’s household (Ephesians 2:19).
Understanding this changes our choices. Would a faithful son betray his father? Would a loving sister reject wisdom for a path that harms herself and others in her family? As God’s family, we are called to love what He loves and reject what would dishonour Him and hurt His people— our family!
iii. Who Are You Listening To?
Who we listen to reveals where our heart truly belongs. Proverbs personifies wisdom as a woman calling us to truth, just as folly is portrayed as another woman luring us into destruction. If we belong to God’s family, we will listen to the voice of wisdom, not the seductive whispers of sin.
So let’s examine ourselves:
Do we truly grasp our identity as children of God?
Are we living in a way that strengthens or weakens God’s family?
Are we honouring our Father in our choices?
Let’s pray together
“Father, thank you for adopting me into your family. Thank you, Jesus, for making me your own. Help me to treasure and protect your family. Give me a heart that delights in your wisdom and rejects what would harm me and others. Amen.”
