Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional (posted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) as we begin our new vision series, Rivers.
Today, we reflect on whether we truly believe that Jesus’ promise of living water is for us, or are we disqualifying ourselves?
You can listen to this devotional below
‘On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.’ (John 7:37-39)
1. Jesus invites us to come to Him - the promise is for you!
Many of us disqualify ourselves in life. We carry a sense of unworthiness, believing good things are for others but not for us. Sadly, we can bring this same mindset into our Christian walk. We imagine that the promise of the Spirit’s fullness is for “the keen ones,” “the mature ones,” or “the holy ones”—but not for us.
At heart, this is failing to apply the gospel. We listen to the enemy’s accusations rather than Jesus’ words. But the truth is simple: if you are a child of God through faith in Christ, the promise is for you!
Jesus said:
‘“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”’ (Luke 11:13)
Our Father is not reluctant to give His Spirit, He delights to do so. If He’s given you His greatest gift - His Son, why would He withhold anything else that would benefit you?
2. Our faith is seen in our response - does our life show that we believe Jesus?
To receive Jesus’ promise, we must take Him at His word. Many of us would quickly say, “Of course I believe every word of God!” But our actions reveal whether that is true.
If someone calls, “Dinner’s ready!” yet we remain seated and hungry, our response shows whether we really believe. Likewise, if we neglect to come to Jesus daily to drink of His Spirit, our faith is not being lived out as it should.
Too often we misplace our hope and drink from the wrong streams. We turn to the promises and standards of this world for satisfaction. It’s not wrong to learn from psychologists, business leaders, or podcasters, but if these voices saturate us more than God’s Word and Spirit, we are drinking from polluted streams instead of the living water of Christ.
Sometimes, out of love, God even allows us to walk through difficult seasons to make us thirsty again. Think of Israel in the wilderness—when they lacked water, they cried out in fear and unbelief, yet God provided for them. Those deserts revealed their need and God’s faithfulness. In the same way, Jesus wants to use the deserts of our lives to draw us back to Him, the true source of living water.
Response
Is my faith in Christ? Not only for salvation, but do I believe His promise for the presence of the Holy Spirit to fill me?
Does the way I use my time show that I really believe Jesus’ invitation?
Are the challenges of my life drawing me to greater dependence on the Spirit?
Am I encouraging my brothers and sisters to believe that Jesus’ promise is also for them?
Community Group Notes
This week and next, we don't have our usual Community Groups. Instead, on the 9th and 17th (in the building, beginning at 7:00pm with a meal), we have this year's Together evenings. Please make every effort to come along to worship, be inspired and fellowship together.
