Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional. This week, through this week of prayer, we’re taking a short break from Ephesians to think about The Power of Prayer.
Today, we reflect on how prayer is the key to fruitfulness because prayer connects us to Jesus.
You can listen to this devotional below
We all know that if we don’t charge our phone or another device, it will become useless. However, likewise, if we are not truly connected to God, we will become ineffective and unfruitful and vulnerable to failure.
Jesus talks about it in this way:
‘Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.’ (John 15:4-5)
I hope we can see that apart from a healthy relationship with Jesus, we can ‘do nothing’! Now, of course, we can do lots, but we won’t be fruitful and we won’t do the works that God wants to lead us into. Imagine a person who buys pencils - thousands of them. He loves to simply sharpen them and he does so until he has to start on a new one. He ends up with a great pile of pencil sharpening. He very busy. He’s the best and making a pencil sharp. He’s devoted at the expense of his health and family. However, He’s not using the pencils for what they are intended - no art is produced. Likewise, we must remain in the vine - be prayerful - if we are to be used for the purposes that God has for us.
Busyness is not the same as obedience and fruitfulness to Jesus!
How do we remain in the vine?
Prayer is a massive part of this. It’s in prayer that we meet God and our lives and aligned with His heart and will. I used to have a black and white television. I had to turn the dial and move the ariel in order to get the best picture that was possible - it needed tuning. Likewise, prayer re-tunes us. It leads us to repent of sin. Leads us to faith for new actions. restores our love and joy.
Response
Are we remaining in the vine through prayer?
Do we truly believe that we can do nothing without being close to Jesus?
Let’s come to prayer with fresh faith that we will meet God and be transformed.
Focus of prayer for today
This week, at CCP, is a week of prayer. Today, our focus for prayer is:
How would you like to be more fruitful in your character - let’s pray and pray for ourselves and one another to grow in the fruit of the Spirit.
Let’s pray for evangelistic fruit in the various ministries that we run such as the various Alphas that we are running.
Let’s pray for finances - your personal finances, the finances of the church and our upcoming gift days.
Pray for students and twenties in our church and more broadly.
