‘Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.’ (Proverbs 3:13-15)
i. Blessed are those who find wisdom
Recently I was watching a documentary about a 70s rock star. He had a terrible relationship with his parents and wanted to find significance and he thought he could do this through music. However, what he found was that fame and wealth simply amplified his problems and he even wished he could go back to being the person he was before he found fame.
How would you and I defined the ‘blessed’ life? fame? A house in the country? A yacht? A sports car? A certain career? Whilst there are many facets to a blessed life, at the heart of it, is a life that aligned with God and His will. Therefore, wisdom is at the heart of the blessed life. This is great news because, not many of us can succeed in being rich and prosperous, we can all ‘find wisdom’ and be blessed in a very true sense.
ii. She is true treasure
This proverb gives us the reason — the inspiration — for why we should do the hard work of seeking and living out God’s wisdom.
We’re told:
“She is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.” (Proverbs 3:14–15)
Without a compelling vision, we won’t act. If we’re not inspired, we remain static. God is calling us to wake up to the incomparable value of wisdom — to see that nothing we desire compares to her.
Think of the American Gold Rush. It began in 1848 when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in California. Within a year, hundreds of thousands of prospectors — the “forty-niners” — left their homes, careers, and comfort to seek fortune in the West. Why? Because they were gripped by hope and vision.
We see a similar example in the life of the Apostle Paul. Before following Jesus, Paul had status, education, influence — all the worldly markers of success. But after encountering Christ, he wrote:
“Whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ… I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:7–8)
Why did Paul give up everything? Because he had seen something far more valuable. Christ — and the wisdom that flows from knowing Him — became his true treasure.
Whether it’s the “forty-niners” chasing gold, or Paul abandoning worldly gain for eternal wisdom, the pattern is clear: when we see something as truly valuable, we go after it. So let’s fix our eyes on wisdom — for she is more precious than rubies, and nothing we desire compares with her.
Today, we need to be inspired again — not by fleeting wealth, but by the far superior life that God’s wisdom offers. Her worth surpasses anything we could chase in this world. Let’s seek her with all our hearts.
Let’s pray together
“Father, I thank you that you want to teach me wisdom. You want me to have a life that’s a blessing to myself and to others. You promise that I’ll be ‘blessed’ and ‘profited’ and get a ‘better return’ as I invest my heart and mind in you and your wisdom. Help all my value judgements to flow from your wisdom. Amen.”
