Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional (posted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) as we begin our new vision series, Rivers.

Today, we reflect on how we can actually make drinking from Jesus - being filled with the Spirit - a daily reality.

You can listen to this devotional below

‘On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”  By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.’ (John 7:37-39)

How can I receive - how do I drink?

1. Come to Jesus

Jesus invites us, “Come to me”. The first step is simply to make space and a habit of coming to Him - in private prayer, in His Word, and with His people. If we are too busy for Jesus, it shows that other things are more important to us. We are never too busy to eat, sleep, work, wash,  be entertained… so we must not be too busy to pray!

In saying “Come to me” we are reminded that we come through Christ - through the gospel.  Our confidence in drawing near is not based on how good we are but on what Jesus has done:

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus…” (Hebrews 10:19)

Because of His cross, we can come freely and expectantly.

2. Believe the promise

As we’ve already seen, we need to believe that this promise is for us - that we can and need to drink from Jesus.

Jesus’ promise is not just for others, it’s for you! Even after salvation, we must continue to believe that we need daily refreshing and empowering. Christianity is not a one-time decision but an ongoing relationship.

If rivers of living water are to flow from us, we must stay close to the Source. We must come to Jesus daily.

3. Ask Jesus for living water

Believing the promise must lead to asking. Unlike Oliver Twist, who was rebuked for asking for more, God’s children are welcomed when they come hungry and thirsty!

Paul gives us an example of how to pray:

‘I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.’ (Ephesians 1:17)

Notice - Paul keeps asking. And so must we: keep knocking, keep seeking, keep praying for ourselves and for our church family.

3. Let’s keep seeking to drink together

At the risk of being repetitive, let’s keep asking and keep drinking! Paul writes about this ongoing pursuit:

‘Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.’ (Ephesians 5:18–20)

The command here literally means, ‘Go on being filled with the Spirit.’ It describes a daily habit of seeking His presence. And what is the result? Worship flows freely. Gratitude becomes our posture. Christ becomes the centre of everything.

Response

  • Is my confidence in the blood of Jesus - His death for my sin?

  • Do I know that I’m a temple of the Spirit because of the grace of God?

  • Do I believe Jesus includes someone even like me in this invitation?

  • Am I asking and seeking, knowing that I will receive?

  • As a church, are we making space to come to Jesus together and drink of His Spirit? Am I both praying for others and receiving prayer myself?

Community Group Notes

This week and next, we don't have our usual Community Groups. Instead, on the 9th and 17th (in the building, beginning at 7:00pm with a meal), we have this year's Together evenings. Please make every effort to come along to worship, be inspired and fellowship together.
