Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional (posted, at present, every weekday) as we begin our Ephesians series: Ephesians - To the praise, for the purpose, in the power of God.

This week, we are looking at Ephesians 1:1-3.

Today, we ask: what does it mean to have every spiritual blessing?

You can listen to this devotional below

‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.’ (Ephesians 1:3)

Paul opens Ephesians with a powerful declaration of praise, celebrating the overflowing blessings believers have received through Jesus. But what does it mean that we’ve been ‘blessed in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ’?

1. Blessed in the heavenly realms

The phrase ‘in the heavenly realms’ reminds us that our blessings are not tied to earthly wealth, comfort, or success. Instead, they are spiritual and eternal - rooted in our union with Christ, who is seated in heaven. This speaks to our new identity and status: if we are in Christ, then we are already, in some sense, seated with Him in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). All the riches of salvation - regeneration, justification, adoption, and more - are ours because we are united to Him. Paul’s aim is to lift our eyes to see that, regardless of how life may look outwardly, we are spiritually rich in Jesus.

2. Blessed with every spiritual blessing

Paul emphasises that we lack nothing. Every spiritual blessing has been given to us. These blessings come from the Holy Spirit - the third Person of the Trinity - who makes the work of Christ real in our lives. The Spirit is the one who awakens faith in us, assures us of our adoption, fills us with joy and peace, and strengthens us to live for God. From beginning to end, our salvation is a work of the Triune God: the Father blesses, the Son secures, and the Spirit applies.

This verse shows us the heart of true Christian praise: it is rooted in who God is, what He has done, and how completely He has blessed us in Christ.

Response

How blessed do you feel today? Life may be hard, but God’s Word invites you to see beyond your circumstances. In Christ, you are already rich - deeply and eternally. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with fresh faith and joy in all the good things that are ours in Christ.

Community Group Notes

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

Specifically, ensure everyone knows the details of our upcoming New Ground Weekend.

2. Icebreaker

How has God been speaking to you from His Word this week, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Today, because of our theme, let’s leave more time at the end to worship and pray together.

4. Study and pray together

On Sunday, we began our new series entitled:

Ephesians: to the praise, for the purpose, in the power of God.

Please read Ephesians 1:1-3 and discuss:

  1. What did God speak to you about through Sunday’s message?

  2. How do these verses inspire us to praise God?

  3. What is your current practice regarding praise and worship in your devotions, or, how would you like to develop in this vital practice?

  4. For the rest of our time together, let’s spend time in worship and prayer.
