Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional (currently posted on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) as we continue our 9-week series: Fresh Vision From Jesus' High Priestly Prayer from John 17.

This week, we finish our three-week focus on John 17:20-26, the third section of Jesus' High Priestly Prayer, where Jesus prays for us to effectively reach those outside of faith.

Please read John 17:20–26.

Our experience of God should always lead to a desire for others to know Him.

I wonder what you would think of as the most beautiful or glorious thing? I think back to 1969, when Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon and looked back towards the Earth, suspended in the darkness like a brilliant blue jewel. Many astronauts have said that seeing our planet from space was one of the most beautiful sights imaginable. Apollo 15 astronaut James Irwin described it as "the size of a marble, the most beautiful you can imagine." Yet, glorious as that sight must have been, the Bible tells us there is a beauty and glory that far surpasses even the splendour of creation - the glory of God Himself.

Jesus prayed:

‘“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.”’ (John 17:24)

Jesus speaks here of His glory. The Greek word dóxa speaks of splendour, brilliance, honour, majesty and excellence.

It is inspiring to read the words of Psalm 19 and remember that the glory of Jesus - the eternal Word through whom all things were created - is displayed in creation itself:

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge." (Psalm 19:1–2)

As we gaze at creation, we catch a glimpse of Christ's glory. Yet we see that glory muted to some extent by a creation that has been marred by the fall. Wonderful as creation is, it is only a faint reflection of the splendour we shall one day behold. Our heavenly vision of Christ's glory will so far surpass anything we have seen on earth that it will be like the rising sun outshining the light of a candle.

The word glory (dóxa) appears repeatedly throughout Jesus' prayer:

  • "Father, glorify your Son..." (17:1)

  • "I have glorified you on earth." (17:4)

  • "Glorify me in your presence..." (17:5)

  • "I have given them the glory that you gave me..." (17:22)

  • "They may see my glory..." (17:24)

Jesus reveals His deity as He speaks of the eternal glory He shared with the Father before the creation of the world, and of His desire that we should one day behold that glory in its fullness.

Even now, salvation is described as coming to know the glory of Christ. Jesus says:

‘“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one.”’ (John 17:22)

To become a Christian is to begin to see and treasure the glory of Jesus - to recognise who He truly is and to receive Him as Lord and Saviour.

Jesus wants us to know His glory now and to behold it perfectly in the age to come. As our love for His glory grows, so too will our longing for others to know Him. His prayer should become our prayer:

‘“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.”’ (John 17:24)

As Jesus prayed that we would one day see His glory in heaven, so we should long for the people around us to see His glory and be with Him forever.

To desire that someone should behold the glory of Christ and spend eternity with Him is to desire the greatest possible good for them. No parent can have a greater ambition for their child, and no friend can wish for anything better for another friend.

So let us seek to delight more deeply in the glory of Jesus. As we do, we will find our hearts increasingly longing for those around us to come to know, love and enjoy Him forever.

Moment To Reflect

Jesus wants us to see His glory now and, one day, to behold it perfectly. As our love for His glory grows, so will our desire for others to see and enjoy that same glory.

  • How can you take more time to recognise and worship Jesus as you enjoy the beauty of creation?

  • How can your daily times of devotion become a deeper pursuit of the glory of Christ?

Community Group Study

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

2. Icebreaker

You might want to use the icebreaker: How has God been speaking to you from His Word recently, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

On Sunday, we finished our series, Fresh Vision From Jesus’ Prayer. Our message on  was: Those who are filled with God’s love will love what He loves - most importantly, will love God Himself!

Read John 17:20–26 together and discuss:

  • What particularly spoke to you, challenged, or inspired you from Sunday’s message?

  • In this third section of Jesus’ prayer (17:20-26), what are the various things that he prays for those who become Christians? What aspects particularly resonate with you and why?

  • V.26 - What is Jesus continuing to do, and what does this impart to us?

  • Loving God, and worshipping Him, is to be our highest priority; how can we develop our love for God and our worship?

SIV (Serve, Invest and Invite)

  • Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

  • Pray for the ‘people of peace’ in our lives (see note below), asking God to open their hearts and give us the Love and boldness to share His love as He opens opportunities.

In our prayers together, let’s pray for a few themes together:

  • New Ground Sunday: Continue praying for our upcoming New Ground Sunday on this Sunday, the 8th November - that it would be a great morning that inspires vision for our family of churches.

  • The Gift Of Prophecy: Pray for the gift of prophecy to be more evident and powerful when we meet together.

  • General Prayer: Let’s also pray for one another based on our study, and bringing before God any other needs or requests for prayer.
