Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional (currently posted on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) as we continue our 9-week series: Fresh Vision From Jesus' High Priestly Prayer from John 17.

This week, we finish our three-week focus on John 17:20-26, the third section of Jesus' High Priestly Prayer, where Jesus prays for us to effectively reach those outside of faith.

Please read John 17:20–26.

I'm sure many of us know what it feels like to head to the airport with a few nagging worries. Is my passport still valid? Have I got the right documents? Will the flight be delayed or cancelled?

A while ago, I arrived at the airport to fly to Romania only to discover that the airline had sold more tickets than there were seats on the plane! I never boarded the flight!

Life is full of uncertainties. But there is one journey about which God's people can have complete confidence. If we belong to Christ, we can be certain that one day we will be with Him and see His glory.

How confident are you that you will be welcomed into eternal life?

Jesus prays:

"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world." (John 17:24)

Listen carefully to what Jesus is saying. He desires that His people will be with Him and see His glory. The prayers of Jesus do not fail! If you belong to Him, this is your future.

Earlier in His prayer, Jesus gives us the same assurance:

"While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled." (John 17:12)

None of those whom the Father has given to the Son will ultimately be lost. Jesus protects His people, prays for His people, and will bring His people safely home.

Jesus makes this promise even more clearly in John 10:

"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one." (John 10:27–30)

What wonderful promises!

  • We are Jesus' sheep.

  • He knows us personally.

  • He has given us eternal life.

  • We will never perish.

  • No one can snatch us out of Jesus' hand.

  • No one can snatch us out of the Father's hand.

Many Christians struggle with assurance of salvation. Discouraging circumstances, ongoing battles with sin, poor teaching, illness, or anxious personalities can all cloud our confidence.

Yet at the heart of our doubts is this question: Will we believe our changing feelings, or will we believe the unchanging promises of Christ?

Today, let Jesus' words strengthen your heart. He has prayed for you:

"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory."

One day, by His grace, you will - our faith will be turned to sight, as we sing in the hymn:

“And Lord, haste the day, When my faith shall be sight,”

Moment To Reflect

Jesus' prayer and His promises assure us that if we have received Him as Lord and Saviour, He will receive us into eternal life. Do we see that if we are to reach our community for Jesus, we must be assured of the salvation and message we want others to hear.

  • Do you have assurance of your salvation? If not, what fears or doubts are making it difficult for you to trust Christ's promises?

  • How can you regularly strengthen your assurance through meditating on Scripture, praying God's promises, and singing truths that remind you of His saving grace?

Community Group Study

1. Notices

It might be good to begin with notices. Please share from this week’s Church News.

2. Icebreaker

You might want to use the icebreaker: How has God been speaking to you from His Word recently, and how has this helped you?

3. Worship together

Let’s begin our time together by lifting our eyes and hearts to worship our great God. Perhaps you have readings and songs that you would like to use together. Let’s be open to the gifts that the Spirit wants to give in order to encourage one another.

4. Study and pray together

Balanced Time Allocation - Please ensure a balanced focus on discussion, SIV (Serve, Invest, and Invite), and prayer so that each section is meaningful and fruitful.

On Sunday, we finished our series, Fresh Vision From Jesus’ Prayer. Our message on  was: Those who are filled with God’s love will love what He loves - most importantly, will love God Himself!

Read John 17:20–26 together and discuss:

  • What particularly spoke to you, challenged, or inspired you from Sunday’s message?

  • In this third section of Jesus’ prayer (17:20-26), what are the various things that he prays for those who become Christians? What aspects particularly resonate with you and why?

  • V.26 - What is Jesus continuing to do, and what does this impart to us?

  • Loving God, and worshipping Him, is to be our highest priority; how can we develop our love for God and our worship?

SIV (Serve, Invest and Invite)

  • Have you had any recent opportunities to Serve, Invest in, or Invite someone toward Jesus? Let’s encourage one another by sharing testimonies of God at work through us.

  • Pray for the ‘people of peace’ in our lives (see note below), asking God to open their hearts and give us the Love and boldness to share His love as He opens opportunities.

In our prayers together, let’s pray for a few themes together:

  • New Ground Sunday: Continue praying for our upcoming New Ground Sunday on this Sunday, the 8th November - that it would be a great morning that inspires vision for our family of churches.

  • The Gift Of Prophecy: Pray for the gift of prophecy to be more evident and powerful when we meet together.

  • General Prayer: Let’s also pray for one another based on our study, and bringing before God any other needs or requests for prayer.
